First Edition, June 1996
Welcome to Hake Internet Projects' Web Site Owner's Manual. We're in the business of developing and hosting World Wide Web sites, but our services extend beyond that basic mission, into the realm of Internet education. Our customers come to us with varying levels of Internet/Web experience, and we pride ourselves on helping them up the relatively steep, but brief learning curve. Let's face it -- most of this stuff isn't rocket science, but when it's all new to you it can be a little daunting.
The purpose of this manual is to provide our new and current customers with information on Internet access, Web site development, Web site promotion, and effective electronic communications with prospective clients. This is our first edition. It is available in hypertext on the Web at: http://hake.com/om.htm, and in print. We welcome your comments and suggestions. Please feel free to send email to webmaster@hake.com, or use our inquiry form at http://ilw.com/inquire.html-ssi. No doubt we will make many improvements in future editions.
The World Wide Web is the most exciting communications development in history! Its potential is vast. Having a Web site makes you a global publisher. In thinking about your site, we recommend that you keep the "publishing" analogy in mind. The simplest vision of a Web site is that it is "like a billboard." That's a valuable metaphor. As the publisher of a global billboard, which you can quickly and easily change, you have control of today's most cost-effective form of advertising.
But you should recognize that your Web site is not "just" a billboard, and it should not be directed solely at prospective clients. It is also a medium for communicating, in a great variety of ways, with established clients, with other lawyers, and with the general public.
We wish you the best of luck in all of your Internet endeavors.
